Difference Between Singapore Math and Canadian Math

  1. Teaching Strategies

    • Singapore Math: Emphasizes conceptual understanding, step-by-step reasoning, and problem-solving. It uses concrete and visual methods (such as model diagrams) to help students grasp abstract mathematical concepts. The focus is on ensuring that students can apply foundational knowledge flexibly.

    • Canadian Math: Focuses on standardized knowledge delivery and practice, emphasizing the mastery and application of basic skills, with less emphasis on deep problem-solving strategies.

    • Problem-solving Abilities

      • Singapore Math: Focuses on developing students’ problem-solving skills through a systematic reasoning process, teaching them how to analyze and solve complex problems. The “Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract” approach helps students gradually develop independent thinking and logical reasoning abilities.

      • Canadian Math: Focuses more on basic applications and direct problem-solving. The cultivation of creative thinking and problem analysis skills is less structured compared to Singapore Math.

      • Content and Depth

        • Singapore Math: The curriculum is compact and more advanced, introducing abstract and difficult concepts at an earlier grade level. The pacing is faster and requires a higher level of understanding and reasoning ability from students.

        • Canadian Math: The content is broader but less in-depth, ensuring that students can grasp fundamental concepts.

        • Applied Situation and Cultural Differences

          • Singapore Math: Its rigorous system and high standards are well-suited for students who want to challenge themselves and excel in international math assessments, particularly in problem-solving and logical thinking.

          • Canadian Math: The curriculum is more focused on adaptability and diversity, meeting the basic needs of students at different levels.

          • Resources and Assessment

            • Singapore Math: Many parents choose Singapore Math for their children due to its high-quality tutoring resources and internationally recognized specialized textbooks and methods.

            • Canadian Math: Each province has its own standards, and materials and methods tend to be more decentralized.
